Census data shows that the population of New York City increased by well over 50 times in the 100 years between 1800 and 1900, largely because of immigration, industrialization, the creation of new jobs, and the consolidation of the five boroughs in 1898. With primary source illustrations and authentic text, this book follows New York City throughout the tumultuous 1800s, with an emphasis on the daily life of ordinary citizens.
